Job Summary

Responsible for conducting permitting inspections to ensure compliance with groundwater protection safety regulations. This role is crucial in protecting public health from water and airborne contaminants by inspecting, evaluating, and monitoring septic systems to ensure they meet local, state, and federal environmental standards.

Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with at least five (5) years of experience in septic system design and installation. Alternatively, an associate’s degree in environmental science, engineering, or a related field is acceptable.
  • Relevant experience in environmental health, sanitation, or septic system inspection will also be considered.
  • Strong knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions.
  • Valid Tennessee driver’s license and ability to conduct fieldwork in various weather conditions.
  • National Association of Wastewater Technicians (NAWT) Certification and/or TDEC Licensure
  • Experience with GIS and other mapping technologies is preferred.
  • Knowledge of principle and practices of environmental sanitation.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct permitting, inspections, and investigation to ensure compliance with sanitation and groundwater protection regulations.
  • Evaluate soil and site conditions for suitability of septic system installations.
  • Investigate complaints related to septic systems and take appropriate actions.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections and findings.
  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to homeowners, contractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Prepare reports and documents as required.
  • Effectively communicate with and interact with the public to address concerns and provide information.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform fieldwork in various weather conditions.
  • Capability to walk, stand, and climb as necessary during inspections.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment and materials up to 50 pounds.
