What Is Household Hazardous Waste?

Many people assume they don’t have hazardous materials in their homes, but items like old cleaners, fuels, pesticides, and automotive fluids are common examples. These materials are often flammable, corrosive, reactive, or toxic and should never be thrown in the garbage. Proper disposal protects both the environment and public health.

Items Accepted:

  • Cleaners
  • Fuels
  • Pesticides
  • Automotive fluids

Items NOT Accepted:

  • Medical and infectious wastes (except needles and sharps in puncture-proof containers)
  • Ammunition and explosives
  • Radioactive wastes, including smoke detectors
  • Empty containers
  • Paint and electronics (see below for alternative options)

Special Notes:

  • Household waste only: Businesses, schools, farms, churches, and other non-household sources (classified as Very Small Quantity Generators) must call 615-643-3170 to request a price quote and schedule an appointment.
  • Paint disposal: Up to 10 gallons of latex and oil-based paints can be disposed of every Tuesday from 7:30 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. at the Post Oak Convenience Center in Rockwood.
  • Electronics recycling: Use the metal recycling container or bring items to ROANEnet in Harriman.

Why Participate?

By safely disposing of hazardous materials, you’re helping to prevent environmental contamination and keeping others safe from harm. Let’s work together to protect Roane County’s natural beauty and community health.
