On Thursday, August 28th, the Roane County Solid Waste and Recycling Department and the Roane County Highway Department partnered in a visit to Bio-STEM classes at Rockwood High School to share an important message about environmental responsibility. Solid Waste and Recycling Director, Melinda Ferrell, and Mary Gray from the Highway Department presented on solid waste, recycling, and litter education, giving students a closer look at how their daily choices impact the community and environment.

The presentation included discussion on proper recycling habits, the importance of reducing waste, and how litter affects both the beauty and health of Roane County. Students were encouraged to ask questions and think about ways they can take action in their schools, homes, and neighborhoods.

As part of the conversation, students also learned about opportunities to get involved outside the classroom. These included potential field trips to see the recycling center in action and volunteer opportunities such as Hazardous Waste Day, roadside cleanups, and the adopt-a-highway program. These hands-on experiences give students the chance to see firsthand how local programs operate and how their participation can make a lasting difference.

Partnerships like this allow us to connect directly with young people and inspire the next generation to take an active role in caring for their community. Sharing real-world examples and practical tips helps students understand the important role they play in keeping Roane County clean and sustainable.

“We are excited to continue building this partnership with our schools,” said Melinda Ferrell, Solid Waste and Recycling Director. “Our hope is to grow these presentations into a county-wide initiative, giving students across Roane County the opportunity to learn more about recycling, solid waste management, and environmental stewardship.”

By working together, the County, schools, and families can help ensure a cleaner, greener future for all.
